AOWC Applauds Interior Department Efforts to Advance U.S. Offshore Wind

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The American Offshore Wind Coalition (AOWC), the nation’s only group focused solely on creating more jobs and opportunities for American workers and companies in the U.S. offshore wind industry, applauds the efforts of the Department of Interior to move the offshore wind energy industry forward in a fully informed and legally defensible manner.

The Department of Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) today announced the completion of a Supplement to its Draft Environmental Impact Statement on the Vineyard Wind project, planned for construction in federal waters off the coast of Massachusetts. BOEM said it anticipates issuing a final Environmental Impact Statement in December.

"Any development involving hundreds of billions of dollars in direct U.S. investment, employing hundreds of thousands of Americans, and using U.S. steel, concrete, turbines, ships and labor will have an impact," AOWC Executive Director Chris Quinn said. "We need to mitigate these where possible and move forward, not just use potential impacts as an excuse to do nothing."

"Amid one of the greatest economic challenges in our nation’s history, this new industry offers incredible opportunities to revitalize port communities, shipbuilding and dormant manufacturing while putting hundreds of thousands of blue-collar Americans to work," Quinn said. "We look forward to working with all parties to start getting U.S. steel and concrete in the water and growing our coastal American communities and economies.”
